Lying on top of Maks after our claiming, I trace circles on his chest with my finger. My heart hurt every time he pulled away from me. It was to the point where I started to think he didn’t want me; that he’d leave when the three months were up, and I’d be left to pine away for a mate I could never have because he wasn’t willing to let go of someone who died years ago. There’s no way I’d have ever been able to compete with a dead person and for a moment, I thought, if I was dead too, maybe he’d spare a thought for me. If I’m honest, I’m still afraid I might’ve forced him into this decision. I don’t know what I was thinking when I brought that knife up here, okay, that’s a lie, I knew exactly what I was thinking but I just wanted the pain in my heart to go away. I didn’t expect to be claimed but since it happened, I feel better. Knowing that Maks won’t be going anywhere is a relief.

Glancing up at him, I find him smiling down at me. He has his arms folded behind his head, and the moon shines a light on his forearm. Sitting up slightly, I take his left arm and pull it from behind his head, so I can look closer at the tattoo there. “A10051…is this what I think it is?”

“Yes.”

“Will you tell me about it? You don’t have to if you don’t want to, but I’d like to know.”

He wraps his arms around me and says, “I was a soldier for the French during World War I. When I was wounded, I faked my death in order to avoid revealing my existence and moved to Poland where I met Aliza. She was a cat shifter and I guess you could say, it was love at first sight for the both of us. We got married when the war ended and after years of trying, finally had our son right after the Germans occupied Poland. Ari was only a few months old when the Nazis came for us. You see, Aliza was Jewish and by association, so was I.”

Sensing his pain through our bond, I open my mouth to tell him it’s okay, that he doesn’t have to tell me, but he continues before I can. “Back then, it wasn’t unusual for the Nazi’s to rehome Jewish children provided they had blonde hair and blue eyes fitting of the Germans’ agenda. Ari wasn’t one of those children and because he was only a few months old, he was of no use to them. They shot him right in front of us before dragging Aliza and I away from our home. We were sent to Auschwitz where we ended up in separate lines. I never saw Aliza again.”

Feeling tears stream down my face, I bury my nose into his neck, and let out a strangled sob. “I’m so, so, sorry that happened to you Maks.
